My Aunt Edith was a widow of 50, working as asecretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very seriousheart disease.

Aunt Edith didn't accept defeat easily. Shebegan studying medical reports in the library and found an article in amagazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said hisfees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn't possibly pay them. But could he tellher of someone whose fees she could pay?

So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listedher reasons for wanting to live: her three children, who would be on their ownin three or four more years; her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing theworld. There wasn't a word of self-pityonly warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.

A few days later, my doorbell rang. AuntEdith didn't wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:

Your beautiful letter moved mevery deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation.

There are three kinds of goals:short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-term goals are those that usuallydeal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goalscan be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It shouldbe remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation,long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solidshort-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date theoccasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that havebeen completed.

They might deal with just one term ofschool or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years.Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to becomediscouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce thebelief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completiondates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.

Long-term goals may be related to ourdreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a staticthing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course ofaction.
