In the past, when more Americans lived onfarms, the typical family had many children. In a farm family, parents andtheir children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and auntslived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture inAmerican life, families became smaller because industry requires workers whoare ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families can not be moved from place to place as smaller familiescan. So, at present people tend to have smaller families.

In the future, because ofindustrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more oftenthan now, so families will be even smaller. 48People oftensay that the Englishman's home is his castle. They mean that the home is veryimportant and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather thanflats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make thempersonal, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, evenif it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the gardenare the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he orshe has a private space which is only for himself or herself and for invitedfriends.

People usually like to mark their space. Ifyou are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; in the rainyou may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a libraryyou may spread your books around you.

Once I was traveling on a train to London.I was on a section for four people and there was a table between us. The manopposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side ofthe table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the wholetable. I had been reading a book about nonverbal (非语言的) communication so I took various papers out of my bag and put them onhis case! 58    Chess must be one of the oldestgames in the world. An Arab traveller in India in the year 900 wrote that itwas played 'long, long ago.' Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played everywhere from Japan to Europesince 1400. The name 'chess' is interesting. When one player is attacking theother's king, he says in English, 'check'. When the king has been caught andcannot move anywhere, he says 'check mate'. These words come from Persian 'Shahmat' means 'the king is dead'. That is when the game is over, and one playerhas won.

Such an old game changes very slowly. Therules have not always been the same as they are now. For example, at one timethe queen could only move one square at a time. Now she is the strongest pieceon the board. It would be interesting to know why this has happened. Chesstakes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You don'thave to be a champion in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by twopeople sitting at the same table. The first time the Americans beat theRussians was in a match played by radio. Some of the chess masters are able toplay many people at the same time. The record was when one man played 400games! It is said that some people played chess by post. 59       A foreigner's firstimpression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush - often underpressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are goingrestlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to completetheir errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace oflife in this country.

Working time is considered precious.Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they toocan be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurriesto make room for the next person. If you don't, waiters will hurry you.

You also find drivers will be abrupt andthat people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, andsmall courtesies with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is becausepeople value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting"itbeyond a certain courtesy point.

The view of time affects the importancewe attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not ahigh priority. Many of us have what might be called "a shortfuse." We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping awaywithout some return - be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Thosecoming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter ofpace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and dailylife.

66How men firstlearnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is amystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow inventedcertain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so thatthey could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certainsigns, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, andwhich could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written inletters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in theirassociations - the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filledwith meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certainwords recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we readand learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.

Great writers are those who not only havegreat thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfullyto our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what wecall literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He canconvey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their positionand association can move men to tears. 67       Shyness is the cause of muchunhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious;that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions.Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind ofimpression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearingunattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortablefeelings must negatively affect people. A person's conception of himself orherself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behavesaffects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think aboutthemselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, arelikely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurancethat they are doing "the right thing." They alsofind it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one,"You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true."It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it isharmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, orat least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined andpatient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in handwith a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept theirweaknesses as well as their strengths.

71    Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words.Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow treeattacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that theygot tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell--a signal causing its neighbors to change thechemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.

Communication, of course, doesn't need to be in words. We can talk toeach other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. In one of these experiments, the scientistsare studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and theirhealth. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the samehealthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eatingtwo cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups.

Most of the day, theyare running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the micein this group are still alive after three years.

The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years, not the three years or more of thethinner mice.

The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping.
